Mixed Berry Banana Smoothie Recipe-Healthy Breakfast Smoothie-Berry Smoothie with Yogurt

I am back from my holidays to the United Kingdom. I had scheduled 2 posts Nool kol Kootu and Foxtail millet Pesarattu which you would have seen. My sincere apologies for not answering many of your mails and comments. I have more than 200 comments and mails waiting to be answered. I will try my best to answer it at the earliest. I saw many berries in the London market which I have seen in pictures but have never tasted. I could not resist preparing this Mixed Berry Banana Smoothie and Berry parfait (coming soon) though I had promised my children that I will not do any website work during my vacation. I prepared this berry smoothie with Greek yogurt and milk and had it for breakfast. It was very delicious and filling. Today we will learn how to make mixed berry banana smoothie following our easy recipe.

Mixed Berry Banana Smoothie Recipe

   Ingredients needed

   Raspberry -1/2 cup
   Blueberry -1/2 cup
   Black berry- 1/2 cup
   Strawberry -1/2 cup
   Ripe Banana -1 (any banana)
   Low fat greek yogurt -1/4 cup
   Low fat Milk -1/2-3/4 cup
   Honey or sugar to taste


Wash all the berries well. You can add more or less of any berries as per your personal preferences but see to it that the mixed berries are around 2 -2 1/4 cup. I used a mix of raspberry, strawberry, black berry and blue berry.


In a blender, add all the berries, chopped banana, Greek yogurt (this gives a creamy texture to the smoothie), milk, honey and blend everything together until smooth and forthy.

Serve chilled. You can use frozen berries also. When you run out of time or when you are in a hurry, you can prepare this smoothie in a jiffy and have it for breakfast.

Note - Instead of greek yogurt, you can use ordinary plain curd (should not be sour) but drain all the water from the curd using a thin cotton or muslin cloth.

This is a very tasty and easy recipe. It has just 3 ingredients- nutella, milk and banana. This refreshing nutella banana shake is great for summer.    Nutella -3 tbps 
   Milk - boiled and chilled -1 cup
   Banana -1 (any banana)


In a blender, blend together banana, nutella and chilled milk. You do not need sugar for this as nutella has sugar in it. If you are using small bananas, you can use 2 bananas otherwise 1 banana is enough.

Pour it into a glass and serve chilled. It is quite filling and very delicious. Banana and chocolate are made for each other.

You will love this banana custard with chocolate topping also.

Papaya Banana Smoothie Recipe-How to make Papaya Banana Smoothie with milk

In our watermelon muskmelon juice recipe, I had shared with you about different food combinations.We learn't that bad food combinations can hinder digestion. Banana and papaya combine very well and are great when taken together. Both banana and papaya have lots of nutritional benefits, they aid digestion, prevent constipation and  help calm the nervous system. This delicious and healthy smoothie is very filling and is full of antioxidants. Here, often the term milkshakes and smoothies are used interchangeable. The main difference between a smoothie and a milkshake is that a milkshake is mostly a blend of milk, ice cream and other flavorings while fruit is the main ingredient in a smoothie. They can also contain milk, yogurt or ice cream. Today we will learn how to make a simple and healthy papaya banana smoothie following this easy recipe.

  Prep Time : 5 mins |  Serves : 1

   Ingredients needed

   Papaya chopped -1 cup
   Ripe Banana -1 medium size or 1/2 a banana
   Chilled milk - 3/4 cup
   Honey -1 tsp

Recipe Instructions

Wash, peel the skin, cut the papaya and scoop out the seeds. Cut it into big chunks.

Boil, cool and chill milk in the refrigerator.

Peel and cut banana. (you can use any variety of banana. I have used ripe green banana for this recipe)

Blend together papaya, banana, milk and honey in a blender until smooth.

Pour into a glass and serve chilled. You can add 1 or 2 ice cubes or crushed ice along with the fruits while blending. You can adjust the consistency of the smoothie according to your personal preferences by increasing or decreasing the quantity of milk.

Unniappam-Unniyappam Recipe-Neyyappam-Vishu Special Recipes

Unni appam is a popular snack in Kerala prepared from rice, jaggery, banana and ghee.Today I am going to share with you 2 methods of preparing unniappams. One which I learnt from my friend and another is an instant version which I got it from a magazine. I have tried and tested both methods. Personally I liked the outcome of the first method but I am  sharing with you the other method also (instant version) as it might come handy when you do not have much time for the elaborate method. Today we will learn how to prepare unniappam following our easy recipes.


How to make Unniappams

Ingredients needed

Raw Rice - 1 cup
Jaggery -1 cup + 2 tbsp
Banana - 1 (medium size)
Cardamom powder - a generous pinch
Coconut bits -3 tbsp
Roasted Sesame seeds - 1/2 tsp
Cooking soda - a pinch
Oil and ghee for cooking appams
Paniyaram pan or appa chatti


Wash and soak rice overnight or for 5-6 hours.

Drain the water and grind it to a smooth paste. Leave it for another 4-5 hours.(what I did was, I soaked rice overnight, ground it in the morning and prepared unniappams in the evening.)

Fry coconut bits in a little ghee and keep it aside.

Add grated jaggery, chopped banana to the ground rice and grind it again.(if jaggery has impurities,dissolve it in little water, strain it and then grind it with rice)

Add cardamom powder, sesame seeds, fried coconut bits, cooking soda and mix well. The consistency of the batter should not be too thin nor too thick, so adjust accordingly.


Heat a paniyaram pan, add a tsp of oil + 1/2 tsp of ghee in each hole of the appa chatti or paniyaram pan.

When the oil + ghee becomes hot, reduce the flame to low and fill the holes with the batter. (fill only up to 3/4 th of the hole). Now cook covered in medium flame.

When the bottom starts  browning, flip it over to the other side with a spoon or a skewer.

Let the other side get cooked uncovered until golden brown. Once cooked, remove and drain on a kitchen towel.

Repeat the same process for the rest of the batter.

Note- You will get soft unniyappams only if rice is soaked for so long and fermented.

Method 2 (Instant version)

Rice flour - 1 cup
Wheat flour -1/4 cup
Jaggery - 1 1/4 cup
Coconut bits - 1/4 cup
Banana -1 medium size
Cardamom powder - 1/4 tsp
Cooking soda - a pinch
Oil + ghee mix for frying
Appam chatti


Fry coconut bits in 2 tsp of ghee and keep it aside.

Heat 1/4 cup of water and dissolve jaggery in it. Filter it to remove impurities.Keep this ready.


In a bowl, mix together rice flour and wheat flour.

Add chopped banana to it and mash it well.

Add warm jaggery to the above mixture.

Then add fried coconut bits, cardamom powder,cooking soda and mix well.This is the unniyappam batter.

Follow the same method as given in the first recipe for preparing unniappams.

Banana Oats Smoothie-Oats Banana Smoothie Recipe with walnuts

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It keeps us active and energetic throughout the morning. It is important that we should not skip our breakfast.The next time,when you run out of dosa batter or do not find time in the morning to prepare any other breakfast, you can resort to oats smoothie or milkshake recipes. How about preparing a quick Oats Banana Smoothie with walnuts for a quick breakfast. It  is quite filling,delicious and also great for weight loss.

How to make Oats Banana Smoothie

Prep time - under 5 minutes
Cook time under 5 minutes
Serves - 1

Ingredients needed 

Oats - 2 tbsp
Milk - 3/4 cup
Yogurt - 1/4 cup (plain, low fat yogurt)
Banana - 1 (peel and cut into 3-4 pieces)
Honey - 2 tsp
Walnuts chopped - 1 tbsp


Cook oats in 1/2 cup of water and allow it to cool. It will take only 2-3 minutes. You can prepare this even a night before and refrigerate, so that it will be more easier for you in the morning. Alternatively you can even powder raw oats and add it to your smoothie but I personally prefer cooking oats.

In a blender, combine cooked oats, yogurt, chopped banana, honey, little milk and puree it until smooth.

Then add the rest of the milk and blend again.

Add chopped walnuts and serve chilled. (I loved biting into bits of walnuts in this smoothie)

Banana Milkshake-How to make Banana Milkshake

Today we will learn how to make a quick, nutritious, filling and delicious milkshake with banana which needs just 3 ingredients.It is also very simple to prepare.

Prep time - under 10 mins
Cook time - Nil
Serves - 1

Ingredients needed

Milk - 1 cup + 1/4 cup
Ripe banana - 1
Honey or jaggery or sugar or any sweetener of your choice.
Vanilla ice cream - a scoop (optional)


Peel the skin, chop and blend banana with 1/4 cups of milk to a fine paste. Then add the rest of the milk, honey, ice cream and blend again. Pour into a glass and serve chilled.

Garnish with grated chocolate if desired.

Steamed Banana Cake-Eggless Steamed Banana Cake

In India, baking is not that common. Many households do not have an oven. When we were young, my mother used to bake cakes in pressure cooker, later on, she switched to stove top oven. When I searched for other methods of making cakes other than pressure cooker, I found that the Chinese usually steam their cakes. I found that very interesting and searched for a steamed cake recipe. I wanted to try it immediately as it seemed very easy, quick and less messy. So I tried a banana steamed cake and I was very happy with the outcome as the cake was very moist and delicious. This post is especially for persons who do not have ovens and want alternative methods of making cakes. Today let us learn the Chinese way of making this easy steamed cake-

Ingredients needed

All purpose flour (maida) -100 g
Icing sugar -1/4 cup or as required
Ripe Banana (mashed) - 1 or 2 small bananas
Milk - 1/4 cup
Water - 2 tsp
Oil - 1 tsp (any flavorless oil. I used saffola)
Baking powder - 2 tsp
Raisins or chocolate chips - fistful (Optional)


Sieve flour and baking powder together and keep it aside.

Keep the steamer ready.

Grease the cake pan.


Take a bowl and mix all the ingredients except flour and raisins until well combined.

Now add the flour and mix gently. Add raisins or chocolate chips.

Now pour the batter in a greased pan or bowl and steam for 15- 20 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.

If you do not have a streamer, bring water to rolling boil in a pan, place a stand and then place the cake bowl, cover it with a lid. Do not open the lid while steaming.

I was so excited to see my cake raising inside, as this is the first time I am steaming a cake.

steaming cake Remove from steamer, allow it to cool for a few minutes. Loosen the sides and then invert it on a plate. Serve warm.

Healthy Oats Breakfast Recipe-Oats Recipe

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and one should never skip breakfast. At times, in the hectic early morning hours, we do not have time to prepare traditional breakfast, at those time, simple yet healthy recipes like these comes to our rescue. Here is a healthy and a quick fix breakfast recipe with oats, milk, dates and banana which is quite filling. Today let us learn to make this easy Oats Breakfast recipe with banana

Ingredients needed

Oats - 1/4 cup
Milk - 1 cup (boiled and cooled)
Banana - 2 small or 1 big
Dates - 3 chopped
Powdered Jaggery - 1 tbsp


Blend bananas and dates with little milk separately and keep it aside.


Combine oats with little water and cook till it reaches a thick consistency.
Add jaggery to taste. Leave it to cool.

Then add the remaining milk, ground banana and dates paste. Mix well and enjoy.

Believe me, it tastes great. I have added dates not only for additional health benefits but also to avoid adding sugar. A great breakfast for kids. My daughter loves this very much.

Variations- You can add any dry fruits of your choice.

Banana Custard Recipe-How to make Banana Custard

This is a very very simple yet exotic dessert which can be whipped up in a jiffy.Banana Custard with hot chocolate sauce is one of my favorite dessert. Try this simple recipe and it will leave you asking for more.Now to Banana Custard Recipe

Ingredients needed

Ripe Green Banana -2
Milk - 1 1/4 cup
Vanilla Custard Powder -1 tbsp heaped
Sugar -2 tbsp
Chocolate -2 small bars


Peel and slice banana into round shapes.

Mix custard powder in a little warm milk and keep it aside.


Bring milk to boil. Add sugar and mix well.

Simmer and add the custard powder mixed with warm milk stirring continuously.

Keep stirring until the mixture becomes slightly thick. It will thicken further when it cools down. Cool and refrigerate.

How to prepare chocolate sauce

Melt chocolate by double boiling. Add a little milk
(1-2 tbsp) to it and boil for some more time. Keep it aside.

(Double boiling is melting chocolate using heat from boiling water and not on direct heat)

How to serve Banana custard

Put the sliced banana pieces in a bowl. Pour cold custard over it and top it with hot or cold chocolate sauce and enjoy.

If preferred you can garnish it with nuts.

Banana is one of my favourite fruits.Though I love eating bananas as such,this time I wanted to try something different with bananas. So I decided to make banana muffins as I remembered watching this on a TV show and had noted down the recipe.I had all the ingredients needed for making banana muffins at home.This was the first muffin I have ever baked and it turned out so well. It was very tasty and delicious.I followed the exact recipe without making any changes except decorating it with slivered almonds.

I did not have a muffin tray but that did not deter me from trying this as I used paper cups for preparing this delicious muffins and that was also successful. I was so delighted as my very first muffins came out so well. You will get 12 muffins for this recipe.

Ingredients needed

Ripe Green Banana -200 grams (peel and then measure it)
Eggs -4
All purpose flour/Maida -200 grams
Sugar - 200 grams (granulated)
Baking powder -1 tsp
Baking soda - a pinch
Oil - 150 grams (any flavorless oil) I used safflower
Banana essence -2 tsp


Sieve maida with baking powder and baking soda.

Grease the muffin tray or cups with oil and dust with flour.

Mash banana well .

Add sugar to it and beat till sugar dissolves.

Add eggs one by one and beat well. ( I used electric hand blender)

Add banana essence and mix it .

Then add flour little by little and fold it gently.(Do not beat after adding flour)

Then add oil and mix it well.

Preheat the oven for 15 minutes.

Now spoon the batter and fill each muffin cups with the batter till 3/4

Top each muffin with slivered almonds.(optional)

Bake for 20 minutes or until the tops are browned.

Insert a toothpick and if it comes out clean, then the muffins are done.

Cool, remove from the cups and serve.

Decorate it with any kind of frosting or toppings if you want but it tasted awesome just like that.

Eggless Banana Muffins

For Eggless banana muffins, replace eggs with 1 cup of milk.
