Plantain stem juice (made with buttermilk) is said to cure urinary stones. Fried gram (pottukadalai) or rice flour or raw rice - 1 tsp (you can use either one for thickening)
For the seasoning
Mustard seeds -1 tsp
Curry Leaves -few
Preparation
Remove the outer cover of the plantain stem, cut it thinly into rounds removing the thread like fibers with you index finger. Soak it in diluted buttermilk to prevent discolouration. Then chop it into small pieces.
Grind coconut, cumin seeds, green chillies and fried gram to a smooth paste adding little water. You can also use 1 tsp of raw rice instead of rice flour or fried gram for thickening. Soak raw rice in 2 tbsp of water for 15 minutes and grind it along with coconut, jeeer and green chilli
Method
Heat a tsp of oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add curry leaves, finely chopped plantain stem, salt, turmeric powder and cook until tender. Sprinkle water and stir now and then to prevent it from getting burnt.
Once cooked, add curd, ground paste, mix well and bring it to boil.
Vazhai thandu kootu is ready. It can be served as a side dish for rice.
