Gooseberry Rice-Nellikai Sadam Recipe-Amla Rice

Gooseberry also called amla is a wonder fruit because it has all the goodness required to maintain good health. It has the richest source of vitamin C. A single gooseberry contains 20 times more vitamin C than that of an orange. It helps to prevent cold and cough if included in our diet regularly. It also helps to remove toxins from our body. A simple way by which you can increase the intake of Vitamin C is by including the Indian gooseberry regularly in your diet in the form of juice, raitas, pickles, gooseberry powder, rice etc. Today we will learn how to make the gooseberry rice following this easy recipe. This is more or less similar to lemon rice in taste.

Gooseberry and gooseberry rice with potato

Nellikai Sadam Recipe

Prep time – under 10 mins
Cook time – under 10 mins
Serves -1

Ingredients needed

Gooseberry finely chopped – 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp ( adjust according to your taste)
Cooked rice – 2 cups
Turmeric powder – a generous pinch
Oil – 1 tbsp + 1 tsp of oil for mixing with rice (sesame seed oil preferable)

For the seasoning

Mustard – 3/4 tsp
Urad dal – 1 1/2 tsp
Bengal gram/kadali paruppu – 1 tsp
Red chillies -2
Green chillies -1 (slit)
Ginger – 1/2 inch piece finely  chopped
Hing – generous pinch
Curry leaves – few

Preparation

Wash and chop gooseberry into fine pieces. Discard the seeds.

Cook rice in such a way that each grain is separate. Take 2 cups of cooked rice, add a tsp of sesame seed oil and spread it on a plate to cool. For this recipe we have used 2 cups of cooked and cooled rice. You can use leftover rice also for this. Keep the rice ready.

Method

Heat a tbsp of oil , add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add channa dal (bengal gram), urad dal, red chillies and hing.

Saute until dal turns golden brown, then add green chilli, ginger, curry leaves, turmeric powder and saute for a few seconds.

Now add finely chopped gooseberry, salt needed and cook till soft.

Once the gooseberry is cooked, add the cooked rice and mix gently. Switch off the flame.Check for salt.

Serve with papads, appalams, homemade potato chips or potato curry or yam curry. It also makes a perfect lunch box recipe.

Include gooseberry in your diet and enjoy its health benefits.

Note– You can add fried peanuts or cashew nuts if preferred.
