Raw Jackfruit Curry-Tender Jackfruit Curry-Palakai Curry

Raw tender jackfruit is used to make curry, pickles, stir fry etc. My mother has never cooked jackfruit, so I do know how to cook raw jackfruit before marriage. After marriage, I learn’ t to make kootu, stir fry and many dishes from tender jackfruit. We have a big jackfruit tree in our garden. Most of the time I never allow the jackfruit to ripe. I pluck it when they are tender. Cleaning and cutting raw jackfruit is a messy job. My helper taught me an easy method to chop raw jackfruit which I am sharing it here. Today we will learn how to make raw jackfruit curry (palakai poriyal) following this easy recipe.

Buy or choose jackfruit which are small in size as shown with an arrow mark in the picture above.

Preparation

Before cutting, spread lot of new papers as the jackfruit will ooze lot of latex. Grease your knife and hands with oil before you start.

Cut the jackfruit into 2 halves using a sharp knife as shown below.

Then cut each half into 4 pieces. Then pressure cook with enough water for 3 whistles.

Once cooked, it is easy to remove the skin. We will be using only the middle part. Discard the outer skin and the thick core which are shown using arrow marks in the picture below. Now we have cooked raw jackfruit. Cut it into small pieces.

Method

Heat oil in a kadai/pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add curry leaves and chopped onions.

Saute onions until it turns transparent.

Add turmeric powder, chilli powder, cooked jackfruit and salt to taste. Cook for a few minutes until the raw smell of the spice powder goes.

Then remove from heat and garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.

Serve delicious raw jackfruit curry with rice.
