Author:Padhu Sankar  Ingredients needed

   Basmati Rice – 1 cup
   Salt needed

 For the seasoning

   Butter or Ghee – 1 1/2 tbsp
   Cinnamon – 2 inch piece
   Bay leaf – 1
   Clove – 1
   Star anise – 1 (optional)
   Cumin seeds/Jeera seeds – 2 tsp

For Garnishing

Fried Onion – 1-2 tbsp (optional)

Preparation

Wash and soak basmati rice in water for 20-30 minutes. Drain and keep it aside.

Method

Heat butter or ghee in a pan, add cloves, cinnamon and bay leaf, saute for a few seconds and then add jeera seeds.

When jeera sizzles, add the drained rice and fry on medium heat until the rice is well coated with the ghee/butter.

Add 2 cups of water and needed salt. Taste the water to check for salt.

When water starts boiling, lower the heat and cook covered until the rice is soft. Fluff it with a fork and serve hot with any gravy side dish of your choice. Dal, paneer gravies, mushroom gravies, non veg gravies, all go well with jeera rice.

If preferred, you can garnish with fried onions.

Fried Onions (healthy way) – Slice onion thinly lengthwise. Dry it for 10 minutes in the sun or under the fan (optional). Heat 2 tsp of oil and fry the onions on very low heat until well browned. You need patience to do this otherwise you can deep fry the onions.

You can cook rice in a rice cooker or pressure cooker or in a pan with a lid. Check out more details on how to cook basmati rice.
