Vazhaipoo Poriyal-Banana Flower Curry (Stir Fry)-Vazhaipoo Recipes

Vazhaipoo is an excellent source of fiber. In our family all of us love plantain flower/banana flower and we include it once every week. It has many health benefits. Apart from being rich in fiber, it is said to be effective in treating excessive bleeding during menstruation. I learn’t this poriyal from my friend as my mother usually prepares only vazhaipoo usili. I love this stir fry very much with rice. Cleaning banana flower can be quite time consuming but it is worth the effort.

How to make Banana flower stir fry

Prep time – under 20 mins
Cook time – under 15 mins
Serves – 2

Ingredients needed

Banana florets – 3 cups – cleaned and chopped
Refer my detailed post on how to clean banana flower
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Onion – 2 medium size
Grated coconut – 1/4 cup
Salt as required

For the seasoning

Oil – 2 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Split urad dal -3/4 tsp
Red chillies – 3
Hing – 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves – a sprig

Preparation

Clean and chop banana flower and keep it in diluted buttermilk to prevent discoloration. Once you finish cleaning and chopping, rinse and drain the buttermilk, add 1/4 cup of water, salt needed, turmeric powder and pressure cook for 3 whistles or until soft. Cooked banana flower  is now ready.

Chop onions finely.

Method

Heat oil in a kadai or pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add urad dal, red chilli, hing, curry leaves and saute until dal turns golden brown.

Add finely chopped onions and saute until onions turn transparent.

Now squeeze out the water (if any) from the cooked banana flower and add it to the above.

Mix well and saute for 3-4 minutes.(the flower is already cooked, so we do not have to saute for a long time). Check for salt. Add if required.

Add grated coconut, mix well and switch off the flame.

Delicious and fiber rich vazhaipoo curry is ready to be served with rice.
