February 21, 2014 by PadhuSankar 11 Comments

I love to include gooseberries in my diet mainly for its health benefits. We all know that gooseberry is an excellent source of Vitamin C, it is high in antioxidants and is great for the skin and hair. It also enhances immunity. So I find out some ways or the other to include gooseberries in our diet.
Gooseberry chutney-Nellikai Thuvaiyal

Today we will learn how to make Gooseberry chutney following our easy recipe-

Gooseberry Chutney-Amla Chutney

Gooseberry Chutney

  Prep Time: 5 Mins| Cook Time: 10 Mins |  Serves: 2

   Ingredients needed

Onion-1
Tomato-1
Gooseberries-4-5 (ordinary variety)
Curry leaves-few
Salt needed

  For the seasoning

Oil-2-3 tsp
Mustard seeds -1/2 tsp
Tur dal-1 tbsp
Bengal gram /channa dal – 2 tsp
Urad dal -1 tbsp
Red Chillies- 4
Hing- a pinch

Preparation

Chop onion and tomato roughly. Cut gooseberry into small pieces and discard the seeds.

Method

Heat oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add tur dal, bengal gram, urad dal, red chillies and hing.

When dal turns golden brown, remove from pan.

In the same pan, saute onions until it turns transparent, then add tomatoes, chopped gooseberries and curry leaves. Once tomatoes becomes mushy, switch off the flame and let it cool.

Grind the dal first, then add the onion tomato mixture and grind it to a coarse paste adding needed salt.

Vitamin C packed Gooseberry chutney is ready. It goes well with curd rice.

Variation – You can do the same recipe without the onion and tomato. This gooseberry chutney goes well with plain rice. Mix chutney with hot rice topped with a tsp of ghee or sesame seed oil and enjoy!!
