Keerai Molagootal Recipe-Keerai Kootu-Palakkad Special

Molagootal is a very popular and traditional Palakkad Iyer dish. It is a very simple and flavorful dish, full of nutrients. Though I have prepared it with arai keerai, it can be prepared with spinach, mulai keerai, paruppu keearai, thandu keerai and even with vegetables like long beans, cabbage, snake gourd or even with a mix of vegetables. It is very easy to prepare and tastes delicious with hot steamed rice. Today we will learn how to make Keerai Molagootal following this easy recipe.

   Ingredients needed

   Arai Keerai/greens – 2 cups firmly packed
   Tur dal – 1/4 cup
   Turmeric powder – a pinch
   Salt needed

   For grinding

   Oil – 1 tsp
   Urad dal – 2 tsp
   Red chillies – 2
   Cumin seeds/jeera – 1 tsp
   Grated Coconut – 1/4 cup

   For the seasoning

   Oil – 1 tsp
   Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
   Urad dal – 3/4 tsp
   Red chilli – 2

Preparation

Wash greens/keerai 2-3 times, drain the water, chop it finely and keep it ready.

Heat a tsp of oil, saute urad dal and red chillies. When dal turns golden brown, turn off the heat. Once it cools, grind it with grated coconut and cumin seeds to a smooth paste.

Pressure cook tur dal with a pinch of turmeric powder for 3 whistles. Once the pressure subsides, open the cooker and mash the dal well.

Method

Cook greens/keerai uncovered with little water. Then mash it well with a ladle or potato smasher.

Now we have cooked greens, cooked dal and the coconut paste ready.

Now add the cooked dal, coconut paste and needed water to the cooked greens. Simmer and cook for 3-4 minutes.

Heat a tsp of oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add urad dal and red chillies. When dal turns golden brown, add the seasoning to the keerai.

Keerai molagootal is ready. Serve it with hot steamed rice and any thogayal.
