Poosanikkai Mor Kootu Recipe-Ash Gourd (white pumpkin) Mor Kootu

Ash Gourd is also called white gourd, winter gourd, winter melon or white pumpkin. It can be used to prepare a variety of dishes ranging from sambar to mor kuzhambu to halwa. After a long gap I am posting a very popular traditional South Indian (Tamil Brahmin) recipe. It is very easy to prepare and goes well with vathal kuzhambu, milagu kuzhambu or even any thogayal. Though I have not tried it with chapati yet, I think it will go well with chapati also.

Ash gourd in Yogurt gravy

Prep time -under 10 mins
Cook time -under 20 mins
Serves -2

Ingredients needed

Ash gourd -chopped -2 cups
Curd/plain yogurt -1 cup
Turmeric powder – a pinch
Salt needed

For grinding

Coconut -1/3 cup
Green chilli -3
Cumin seeds/jeera -3/4 tsp
Raw rice or rice flour -1 tsp (if using raw rice, soak it in hot water for 15 minutes). This is used for thickening.

For the seasoning

Oil -1 tsp
Mustard seeds -1 tsp
Curry leaves -few

Preparation

Remove the skin, seeds and chop the ash gourd into medium sized pieces.

Grind coconut, green chilli, cumin seeds and rice flour to a smooth paste.

Whisk yogurt, add the ground paste to it and mix well. Keep it  ready.

Method

Cook ash gourd in less water with a pinch of turmeric powder and salt until soft. If there is too much water after cooking, strain it and use a little of it for grinding the coconut mixture.

Once the ash gourd is cooked, add the yogurt +ground paste. Boil it for 5 minutes in medium heat and switch it off. Check for salt.

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add curry leaves and pour it over the mor kootu.

Delicious Ash gourd mor kootu is ready to be served.

Note – You can use coconut oil, if preferred for more flavor.
