Puli Aval-Easy Tamarind Poha(upma) Recipe-Poha Pulihora-Poha Recipes

Flattened rice is easily digestible and is used to prepare a variety of dishes from snacks to light breakfast to desserts. It is also called beaten rice. It is known as Aval in Tamil and Malayalam, Atukulu in Telugu, Poha in Hindi, Pohe in Marathi and Avalakki in Kannada. There are many traditional breakfast recipes which can be prepared in just 5 minutes like this puli aval. The great thing is it is also very healthy. Today we will learn how to make puli aval following this easy recipe.

How to prepare Puli Aval Upma 

Prep time -under 5 mins
Cook time -under 10 mins
Serves -1-2

Ingredients needed 

Poha/aval/flattened rice -1 cup
Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
Tamarind paste -1 tsp
Salt as needed

For the seasoning 

Oil – 2 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Asafoetida/hing – a generous pinch
Bengal gram dal/kadalai paruppu – 2 tsp
Red chillies -2
Green chillies -1
Roasted peanuts -2-3 tbsp
Curry leaves – few

Preparation

Wash aval/poha twice and drain the water completely. Add turmeric powder, thick tamarind extract (very less) or tamarind paste, little salt and mix it well. Keep it aside. In the meantime we will prepare the seasoning.

Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add hing, channa dal, red chillies, green chillies, peanuts, salt needed and curry leaves.

When dal turns golden brown, fluff poha and add to it. Mix well, check for salt and cook for 2-3 minutes.

Switch off the flame and serve with potato chips or papads or vadams.
