Kadappa Recipe-Kumbakonam Kadappa

Kadappa is a popular dish of Kumbakonam, hence the name Kumbakonam Kadappa. It is usually served with idli and dosa but goes well with poori also. Today we will learn how to make Kumbakonam Kadappa following this easy recipe with step wise pictures.

   Ingredients needed

   Moong dal -1/4 cup
   Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp
   Onion -1
   Garlic -2 cloves
   Green chilli -1
   Ginger Garlic paste -1 tsp
   Potato -1 medium size
   Salt to taste

   For grinding

   Grated coconut – 3 tbsp
   Fried Gram/pottu kadalai- 1 tbsp
   Green chilli -2
   Khus khus/ kasa kasa -1/2 tsp (optional)
   Garlic -1 clove

   For the seasoning

   Oil -1 1/2 tbsp
   Cinnamon -1 inch piece
   Cloves -2
   Fennel seeds/sombu -1/2 tsp

Preparation


Thinly slice onions and slit green chilli.

Cook moong dal with turmeric powder until soft.

Pressure cook potato, peel the skin, mash it slightly and keep it ready.

Grind the ingredients given under ‘for grinding’ to a smooth paste.

Method


Heat oil in a kadai, add cloves, cinnamon and fennel seeds. When it splutters, add thinly sliced onions, finely chopped garlic, green chilli and saute until onions turn transparent.

Add ginger garlic paste and saute for a few more minutes.

Add cooked dal and a cup of water.

When it starts boiling, add the boiled potatoes, salt needed and the ground paste.

Simmer for 5 minutes and remove from flame. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with idli, dosa or poori.
