Easy Rasam Recipe-South Indian Rasam with Amchur powder

September 15, 2014 by PadhuSankar 2 Comments

I think this will be the first recipe on the internet to prepare the popular South Indian rasam with amchur powder. I tried paruppu rasam with amchur powder instead of tamarind and it was awesome. There was not much of a difference. You can prepare any rasam with amchur powder by just replacing tamarind with amchur powder. I could not wait to share this recipe with everyone out there. This very easy and flavorful rasam can be prepared within 20 minutes.  Today we will learn how to make rasam using amchur powder following this easy recipe with step wise pictures.

Easy Rasam Recipe-with Amchur powder

Easy Rasam Recipe

 Prep Time : 5 mins

 Cook Time : 20 mins
 Serves: 3 cups
 Recipe Category: Rasam-Soup
Recipe Cuisine: South Indian   Ingredients needed

   Tur Dal -1/4 cup
Dried mango powder (Amchur powder) -2 tsp
   Tomatoes -2
Sambar powder or rasam powder -1 tsp
   Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp
   Hing -1/4 tsp
   Curry leaves -few
   Salt needed

For the seasoning

   Ghee -1 tsp
   Mustard seeds -1 tsp
   Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
   Red chilli -1
   Curry leaves -few

For garnishing

Coriander leaves -1 tbsp finely chopped

Preparation

Soak tur dal for 15-20 minutes in about 3/4 cup of hot water. Pressure cook for 3 whistles or until soft. Mash it well and keep it aside. Soaking dal is optional but I follow it as it saves a lot of time and energy. The dal also gets cooked well.

Method

Take a cup of water and mix amchur powder with it. Add chopped tomatoes, sambar powder, turmeric powder, hing, curry leaves and salt needed.
Cook on low or medium flame until it reduces to half.

how to prepare rasam
Add dal along with 1 1/2 cup of water.

When froth starts forming on the surface as in the picture below, turn off the heat. Whatever rasam you are preparing, keep in mind that you should never boil rasam as it will loose its flavor.
Heat a tsp of ghee, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, when it splutters, add red chilli, curry leaves and pour it over the rasam.

Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves and enjoy it with steamed rice and any vegetable curry. You can also have it as a soup.
