Cabbage Curry with Channa dal-Cabbage Curry Recipe

January 18, 2012 by PadhuSankar 20 Comments

The health benefits of cabbage are many. Cabbage offers many vitamins and fiber, with no fat or cholesterol. It has a good amount of vitamin C. I prepare cabbage in many ways. Today I am sharing with you how to make cabbage curry with channa dal following this easy cabbage (patta gobhi) curry recipe.

cabbage curry-cabbage curry with channa

Cabbage Curry with Dal
Serves -4
Ingredients needed

Cabbage -4 cups shredded
Channa dal/Bengal gram/Kadalai paruppu-1/4 cup

Onion -1
Ginger garlic paste – 1/2 tsp
Green chilli -4-5
Turmeric -1/4 tsp

Chilli powder -3/4 tsp
Coriander powder – 1 tsp
Salt as required

For the seasoning

Oil -2 1/2 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Curry leaves -few

Preparation

Soak channa dal for 30 minutes. Drain the water and pressure cook adding little salt till soft but not mushy.

Method

Heat oil in a pan or pressure pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add finely chopped onion, slit green chilli, curry leaves and saute till onions turn pink.

Add ginger garlic paste and saute for a few more minutes.
Add shredded cabbage, chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and salt needed.

Sprinkle water and cook with lid closed on low flame stirring from time to time. Sprinkle more water if needed in between to prevent it from getting burnt.

Once cabbage gets cooked, add the cooked channa dal, mix well and cook for a further 2 minutes. Check for salt. Avoid overcooking it, cook just until slightly tender and not mushy.

Serve cabbage curry with rice or roti or chapati.
