Thakkali Kai Kootu-Green Tomato Kootu Recipe

Thakkali Kai Kootu is prepared with raw tomatoes (nattu variety) or unripe tomatoes. It is a great accompaniment with rice. This is my mother-in-law’s recipe, so naturally it is my husband’s favorite. Today let us learn how to make green tomato kootu following our easy green tomato kootu recipe.


Thakkali kai kootu-Green Tomato Kootu(use green tomatoes and not half ripe which I have used for tomato decoration)


Thakkali Kai kootu Recipe


Prep time – under 15 min
Cook time –
under 15 min
Serves -4

Ingredients needed

Raw tomatoes or green tomatoes – 1/2 kg (500 grams)
Tur dal – 1/3 cup
Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp
Salt as required

Fry and grind

Oil – 1 tsp
Bengal gram (kadalai paruppu) – 1 tbsp
Coriander seeds – 1 tbsp
Red chillies – 4-5
Raw rice – 1/2 tsp (used for thickening)
Grated coconut – 1/4 cup

For the seasoning

Oil -1 tsp
Mustard – 1 tsp
Hing – a pinch
Red chilli – 1
Curry leaves- few

Preparation

Cut each tomato into 8 pieces and keep it aside.

Pressure cook dal with a pinch of turmeric powder till soft. Mash it well.

Heat a tsp of oil, fry bengal gram, coriander seeds, red chilli, raw rice till dal turns golden brown.Then add grated coconut and fry for a few more minutes. After it cools, grind it to a smooth paste with little water and keep it aside.


Method

In a pan, add tomatoes, turmeric powder, needed salt and just enough water to cover the tomatoes. Cook tomatoes till soft.


Then add the grounded paste, cooked dal and bring it to boil.

Season with the ingredients mentioned under seasoning. Check for salt.

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with rice.

      You can skip the coconut and add another 1 tsp of rice or rice flour.
