Vazhai Thandu Salad-Banana Stem Salad Recipe

VazhaiThandu or Banana Stem has lot of health benefits. Being rich in fiber, it helps to ease constipation. It is said to be useful in preventing and treating kidney stones. It is diuretic and helps to detoxify the body. It also aids in weight loss. Banana stem has a good source of  potassium and vitamin B6. Banana juice is said to give relief for ulcers. Enjoy the numerous health benefits of plantain stem with this simple plantain stem salad.

Vazhai Thandu Salad

 Prep Time : 10 mins

 Cook Time : 10 mins

   Ingredients needed

   Banana Stem- 1 cup chopped
   Lemon juice to taste
   Salt needed
   Turmeric powder – a pinch

   For the seasoning

   Oil-1/2 tsp
   Mustard seeds -1 tsp
   Green chillies (slit) -2
   Curry leaves -few

   For Garnishing

   Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp finely chopped

Preparation

Remove the outer stem of plantain stem and cut it into rounds removing the thread like fiber with your index finger. Then chop it into small pieces. Keep it in buttermilk until use.

Wash and steam the plantain stem with salt and a pinch of turmeric powder or cook the plantain stem with less water adding a pinch of turmeric powder and salt needed.

Method


Heat oil in a kadai/pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add green chillies, curry leaves and pour it over the cooked plantain stem.

Add lemon juice to taste. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with rice.

    Dear Padhu,
    I make this salad with thinly sliced raw banana stems. I add a pinch of turmeric to the seasoning. Tastes good with koottu, sambar and curd rice.
