Kerala Koottu Curry-Onam Special

Koottu curry is an important dish in Kerala Onam sadhya. I have prepared kootu curry with yam, plantain and bengal gram dal. Today let us learn how to make Onam Special Koottu curry following this easy koottu curry recipe.

Kerala Koottu Curry-Onam Special


Kerala Koottu Curry

 Prep Time : 10 mins

 Cook Time : 15 mins 
 Serves: 3

   Ingredients needed

   Elephant foot yam/senai – 200 grams
   Plantain – 2
   Channa dal / Kadalai paruppu /Bengal gram – 1/4 cup
   Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp
   Chilli powder – 1 tsp
   Jaggery – 3/4 tsp
   Salt as required

   For grinding

   Grated coconut – 1/3 cup
   Red chilli – 2
   Cumin seeds /Jeeragam -3/4 tsp

   For the seasoning

   Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
   Red chilli – 1
   Curry leaves – few

   Grated coconut – 1/4 cup (to be roasted)

Preparation


Soak bengal gram for 15 minutes in warm water and pressure cook until soft.

Peel the skin and chop plantain and yam into medium size pieces.

Grind coconut, red chilli and cumin seeds coarsely and keep it aside.

Method


Pressure cook both plantain and yam with turmeric powder, salt and chilli powder for 2 whistles or until soft.

Add the cooked bengal gram and jaggery to the above.

Then add the ground paste and boil until it thickens.

Now heat a tsp of coconut oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add red chilli, curry leaves and pour this seasoning over the koottu curry.

Fry 1/4 cup of grated coconut until it becomes golden brown and add to the kootu curry.

Serve it with rice.

Use coconut oil for Authentic Kerala taste.

    If bengal gram(kadala) is used peppercorn should be ground along with the coconut. Pepper is a must in koottucurry with kadala

    Thanks will try! In some of your recipes you added pictures. If video is not there then for people like us it helps to see cuttings and size. Thing is I never ate this dish. I’ll see close up pics or videos of others for that but will definitely follow your recipe. Your dishes are full proof for my family as they love them all. Thanks
