Rava Kichadi-Semolina (Sooji) Khichdi Recipe-South Indian Breakfast Recipes

August 22, 2013 by PadhuSankar 34 Comments

Rava Kichadi is one of my most favorite South Indian Breakfast. It is prepared with rava, vegetables and a generous amount of ghee. It is similar to rava bath or khara bath. Usually it is prepared with ghee which gives the soft texture to the kichadi  but I have mixed ghee + oil to avoid excess calories. You can try this for a change instead of the usual vegetable rava upma. Today we will learn how to make rava kichadi following this easy recipe.

Rava Kichadi

How to make Rava Khichdi/Kichadi

Prep time – under 15 mins
Cook time – under 20 mins
Serves – 2

Ingredients needed

Rava/Sooji/Semolina -1 cup
Onion – 3/4 cup finely chopped
Ginger – 1 tsp finely chopped
Green chillies -2 slit
Vegetables – 3/4 cup ( mix of beans, carrot, peas and 1/2 a tomato)
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Water – 3 cups
For topping up – 1 tsp ghee
For roasting – 1 tsp ghee

For the seasoning

Oil – 2 tbsp + Ghee – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Bengal gram/ kadalai paruppu- 2 tsp
Urad dal -1 tsp
Curry leaves – few

Rava Khichdi preparation

Roast rava in a tsp of ghee until you get a nice aroma of roasted rava. Skip this step if you have bought roasted rava.

Chop all the vegetables finely. Slit green chillies and keep it ready.

Method

Heat ghee+oil in a pan/kadai, add bengal gram, when it changes colour slightly, add mustard seeds, urad dal and curry leaves.

When urad dal turns golden brown, add finely chopped onions, slit chillies and ginger.

Saute until onions turn transparent. Then add all the finely chopped vegetables and turmeric powder. Look how colorful it is.(picture below)

Saute and cook the vegetables for 2-3 minutes. Do not over cook the vegetables as it will get cooked along with the rava.

Now add 3 cups of hot water and salt needed. You can taste the water and check for salt. If it is slightly salty, it will be perfect after adding rava.

khichdi preparation

When water starts boiling, reduce the flame to low and add rava slowly with one hand, stirring continuously with the other hand to avoid formation of lumps.

Keep stirring gently, when it becomes semi solid, top it with another tsp of ghee (see pic below) and mix well.

When all the water is absorbed, mix well, close it with a lid and cook on low flame.

How to make rava bath/kichadi

Cook on low flame for 6-7 minutes and switch off the flame. If preferred you can add cashew nuts fried in ghee. The kichadi will taste delicious and similar to the one we get in Hotel Saravana Bhavan if you be a little generous in adding ghee and oil as mentioned.

Side dish for Rava Kichadi – Personally I prefer coconut chutney  and sambar

For this recipe use the regular rava. I have post samba wheat kichadi
    Link here Samba rava khichdi
If you are particular about trying only this recipe, then add more water and cook for more time when using samba godhumai ravai.

Thank you so much for this recipe. All the five or six times I have made upma had been a disaster. This one came out very well despite few veggies being undercooked. Your tips to test salt and the timing to add ghee was extremely useful. Thanks again.

Difference between rava upma and rava khichdi is that rava khichdi has loads of vegetables, addition of turmeric and ghee. It is a little mushy than rava upma as we add more water to make rava khichdi.

For this rava kichadi can you tell me if it is good to pressure cook for a 2-3 whistles? Will it turn out good?
