July 27, 2015 by PadhuSankar 4 Comments

Kaya mezhukkupuratti is a simple and flavorful dish from Kerala prepared with raw banana. This stir fry goes well with rice. I personally love to have it with rasam rice. Today we will learn how to make Kerala style raw banana stir fry following this easy recipe.

 Prep Time : 5 mins

 Cook Time : 15 mins
 Serves: 3
 Recipe Category: Side Dish
 Recipe Cuisine: Kerala
 Author:Padhu Sankar

   Ingredients needed

Raw banana – 2 medium sized banana/2 cups chopped
   Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
   Salt as needed
   Pepper powder – 1/4 tsp

   Shallots – 10 peeled
   Garlic – 2 cloves peeled
   Red Chilli – 1-2

   For the seasoning

Virgin Coconut oil – 2 tsp
   Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
   Curry leaves – a sprig

Preparation

Pulse shallots, garlic and red chilli in a mixer just for a second. Keep it aside.

Peel the skin of raw banana and cut it into cubes. Bring water to boil
(just enough water to cover the raw banana), add turmeric powder, salt needed and the chopped raw banana.

Cook the raw banana until soft but not mushy. Take care not to over cook the banana. Once cooked, strain the excess water and keep it aside.

Method

Heat coconut oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add curry leaves and the ground onion + garlic + red chilli mixture.

Saute until onions turn transparent.

Add the cooked raw banana, pepper powder and cook on medium heat for another few minutes. Check for salt. If preferred, you can drizzle a tsp of coconut oil over the stir fry.

You can sprinkle little water and saute for a few seconds. The banana should also be cooked well but not to a mush.

Like she said, remember the banana is already cooked you are probably sauteing it too long or too hot. You can also let some stay when you drain
