Vazhaipoo Vadai-Banana Flower Vada Recipe-Vazhaipoo Recipes-Tea Time Snacks

July 21, 2014 by PadhuSankar 19 Comments

Vazhaipoo vada is a delicious South Indian snack prepared with banana flower, lentils and spices. Banana flower or banana blossom is one of our family’s favorite. I buy every week and prepare usili, kootu or poriyal or even thuvaiyal with it. I also add it to adai and drumstick leaves poriyal. Banana flower is known as Vazhaipoo in Tamil. It is an excellent source of fiber, it helps prevent constipation. It also helps in alleviating menstrual pain. Today we will learn how to make/prepare vazhaipoo vadai following our easy recipe with step by step pictures.

Vazhaipoo Vadai-Banana Flower Vadai Recipe

Vazhaipoo Vadai

 Prep Time : 10 mins

 Cook Time : 20 mins
 Yields:12-14 vadas
 Recipe Category: Snacks-Appetizer
 Recipe Cuisine: South Indian

   Ingredients needed

   Bengal gram/channa dal/kadalai paruppu -1/4 cup
   Tur dal -1/4 cup
   Green chillies -3
   Fennel seeds/sombu/saunf -1 tsp
   Hing -1/4 tsp
Chutney kadalai / fried gram-2 tsp
   Salt needed
   Onion -1 medium size
Coriander leaves -2 tbsp finely chopped
Banana flower  (tender) – 1/3-1/2 cup finely chopped
   Tender Curry leaves -few

Preparation

Wash and soak bengal gram dal (channa dal) and tur dal together for 2 hours.

Take tender banana flowers alone, chop it and keep in diluted buttermilk until use to prevent discoloration. Check out how to clean vazhaipoo.

After 2 hours, drain the water completely from the dal, add green chillies, fennel seeds,
chutney kadalai (pottukadalai), salt needed and grind it for 2-3 seconds.

Then add the tender chopped banana flowers (drain all the buttermilk and then add), and grind it coarsely. Do not operate the mixie at a stretch. Grind it for 3-4 seconds, leave a gap of 3 seconds and then grind again. If you grind it at a stretch, it will become a smooth paste which we do not want. The vazhaipoo vada batter should be slightly coarse. Taste the batter to check for salt.

Now add finely chopped onions, 2 tbsp of finely chopped coriander leaves and few tender curry leaves. Mix everything well.

Take a lemon sized ball of the batter, flatten it with your hands and form into a disc.

how to make vazhaipoo vadai

Heat oil in a kadai (to check if the oil is hot enough, add a little batter, if it raises to the surface immediately, the oil is ready for frying). Once the oil is hot, reduce the temperature to medium. Drop the prepared discs/patties into the oil gently. Fry both sides until brown. Remove from oil  with a slotted ladle and place on a paper towel or colander to drain excess oil. You can fry 4-5 patties depending on the quantity of oil used.

Repeat the same process for the rest of the batter.

Enjoy delicious vazhaipoo vadai with tea or coffee!!

Note – Chutney kadalai or fried gram or pottukadalai is added to give crispiness to the vada.

Do not add water while grinding. The moisture from the banana flower is enough. But if your mixie does not grind, then add just 2-3 tsp of water.

It is because of the variety of vazhaipoo. Open the maroon outer cover and see inside. The small banana flowers should be pale yellow in color and not dark pink. If it is pink in color, mostly (but not always) it will be bitter. This is from my experience.

You have to use it immediately after chopping otherwise it will turn black if you do not soaking it in diluted buttermilk.

Of course, you can but adding onions gives a nice taste to the vada.
