Coconut Burfi Recipe-Nariyal Burfi-Diwali sweet recipe

September 18, 2011 by PadhuSankar 49 Comments

Coconut Burfi /thengai burfi is very easy to prepare and needs no expertise. It is a very delicious fudge made with fresh grated coconut and I love it for its chewy taste. Today let us learn how to make coconut burfi (coconut is known as nariyal in Hindi and Thengai in Tamil) following this easy coconut burfi recipe.

Coconut burfi-Nariyal Burfi-Thengai Burfi

Easy Coconut Burfi-Thengai Burfi

Coconut Burfi-Thengai Burfi

 Prep Time : 10 mins

 Cook Time : 20 mins
 Yields:10-12 Burfis
 Recipe Category: Dessert-Indian Sweet
 Recipe Cuisine: South Indian
 Author:Padhu Sankar

   Ingredients needed

   Grated coconut – 1 cup
   Sugar – 3/4 cup + 1 tbsp
   Ghee – 2 tsp
   Cardamom powder – 1/4 tsp

Coconut burfi-Thengai Burfi

Preparation

Grease a tray with ghee and keep it ready.

Method

Take a kadai/pan (non stick preferable) add sugar and just enough water (approximately 1/2 cup) to cover the sugar and boil it.

When the sugar water starts boiling, add cardamom powder, ghee and the grated coconut.

Simmer and cook stirring often, till the coconut mixture starts foaming and leaves the sides of the pan. Take a small mixture and if you are able to make a ball out of it, switch off the flames.

Pour it on the greased tray or plate. After it cools a little, cut it into desired shapes.

Leave it to cool completely. After that take the pieces gently and store it in an air tight container.

Enjoy making this easy coconut burfi for Diwali.

Note -Use fresh mature coconuts for best results.

Thanks for sharing this recipe. It tastes good. However, I wasn't too pleased with the quantity that came out. It was just too little and didnt fill up the standard stainless steel thattu ( plate) that I was using. In future, should I just use more coconut ?

You can double the quantity of coconut, sugar and other ingredients. I have written under yields (in that box) that this measurement will yield only 10 small burfis. So if you want more, double the quantity.

Dear Padu what about dirt in sugar. Should we remove it or not necessary.

Buy clean good quality sugar. Another suggestion is you can filter after the sugar dissolves and then follow the same method.

Hi padhu, I've tried some of your recipes and all came out well. Thank you for your detailed recipes. I've a confusion in your coconut burfi recipe- you've written sugar 3/4 cup + 1 tbsp What is to be done with that 1 tbsp sugar?

    Reply
    • Padhu Sankar

      November 22, 2018 at 2:45 am

That is just measurement for sugar. It is not 1 cup but a little less than 1 cup. So I have written as 3/4 cup + 1 tbsp. You can add sugar according to your personal preferences.
