   Ingredients needed

   Noolkol/kohlrabi – 2 cups
Tur dal + Moong dal together -1/4 cup
   Sambar powder – 2 tsp

   For grinding

   Grated coconut – 1/4 cup
   Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Fried gram (Pottukadalai) or rice flour -1 1/2 tsp (used for thickening)

   For the seasoning

   Oil -2 tsp
   Mustard seeds -1 tsp
   Urad dal -1 tsp
   Red Chillies -2
   Hing – a pinch
   Curry leaves – few

   For garnishing

   Coriander leaves

Preparation

Wash, peel the skin and cut noolkol into small cubes or pieces.

Soak tur dal + moong dal in hot water for 15 minutes.

Grind grated coconut, cumin seeds (jeera) and fried gram to a smooth paste. Fried gram is used for thickening the kootu. If you do not have fried gram, you can use a tsp of rice flour.

How to prepare Noolkol kootu

In a cooker or pressure pan, add chopped noolkol, soaked dal, sambar powder, salt needed, turmeric powder, 3/4 cup of water and pressure cook for 3 whistles. (Those who do not have cooker can cook covered in a pan. It will take a longer time than pressure cooker, that’s all.)

Once the pressure subsides, open the cooker (picture above shows the pressure cooked kootu), add the ground coconut paste, 1/4 cup of water and cook for 2-3 minutes on medium flame. Check for salt.

Don't wait for 3 whistles, 2 is sufficient. Adding a couple of green chillies to the grinding paste, betters the taste.
