Simple Chocolate Cake

chocolate cake

Hurray! I have completed 50 posts. So I wanted to celebrate it with a Chocolate cake. Before that I would like to share with you all, a few things. I started blogging just to keep a record of all my recipes. Another reason – may be when my kids grow up they can refer their mom’s blog from wherever they settle down. Isn’t it? But now I got hooked to it and I have also learnt many things after coming here. Your motivating comments has encouraged me to do more. I must thank you all for your encouraging comments and feedback. Thank you very much buddies. I am an amateur in baking and have not gone beyond basics of baking. I learnt this from a friend of mine who is very good in baking cakes. Though I do not have any experience in baking cakes, I think I have done a fairly good job. I am telling you this so that even those who have not tried their hands in baking can easily prepare this cake. Since the recipe is very simple and also does not take much time, I am sharing it with you. Now to the recipe-

Simple Plain Chocolate Cake

Ingredients needed

Butter – 250 grams (Unsalted)
All purpose flour (Maida) -250 grams
Sugar -250 grams (powder it)
Eggs – 4
Baking powder -1 ¼ tsp
Cocoa powder -3 ½ tbsp
Curd -1 ½ tbsp ( it should not be sour)
Vanilla essence -1 tsp

Method

Sieve flour, baking powder and cocoa powder together twice.

Beat the butter till soft and fluffy with an electric hand mixer.

Add the powdered sugar and beat well.

Add eggs and beat for a few more minutes.

Then add flour little by little and fold it in the same direction with a ladle. (Do not use hand mixer for this)

Add Curd and 1 tsp vanilla essence and mix it.

Grease the baking tray with butter and dust little flour on it. Pour the batter in the tray evenly.

Preheat the oven for 10 minutes at 180 degree C and bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.

Cool it for 10 -15 minutes and transfer it on a wire rack.

Decorate it as you wish. Enjoy.

Adieu from Padhu.

You have to preheat the oven at 180 degree C for 10 minutes and bake for 25-30 minutes (180 degree C) or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean. You can use wooden ladle for mixing but that will take a long time. It is better to buy an electric mixer if you have plans of baking many goodies in future.

Hi! To make half of this quantity – what would be the measurements? Let's say 125gm butter/ 125gm sugar/ 125gm maida/ 2 eggs/ 2tbspn Cocoa/ 1tbspn curd/ 1 tsp vanilla essence… What should be the quantity of baking powder – exact half? Thanks a lot in advance.

You need 2 pans for this.As a general rule – whatever cake pan or size you use, the batter should be filled only till a little more than 1/2. Baking time changes according to the oven and pan used.

Hello… I'm new to baking, haven't tried it yet. Can you please suggest me what oven to buy? Microwave oven, electric oven or gas oven? Which one is good and what is the difference? Can you please make a post on this? Or even reply here. Thank you in advance! Keep up the good job!

    Hi padhu
    Thanks for the recipe..
What have you used to top up the cake? Can I use Hershey chocolate syrup for it? And, here in UAE, we get cake mix-could we use the same in place of maida?
Another important question: I could see the picture of your cake which looks slightly different from the cake we buy from the bakery-whose texture is little softer than yours.. Kindly explain how to get that tongue-melting consistency..
Thanks for your clarification in advance..

You can use hershey chocolate syrup. Regarding your doubt – usually cake mix will have baking powder already mixed in it. So you can follow the instructions on the pack.
Regarding your question about cake texture – this cake was soft. Do not know what bakeries use.

Hello can you please tell me the settings you used in OTG to bake? I mean did you turn it on in lower coil only mode or both coils on? and also did you place the tins in middle rack or lowest rack? thank you.

The setting is 180 degree C. I use the bottom coil alone for baking. I place it in the middle rack. This is standard for most of the cake recipes unless otherwise mentioned.
