Idli sambar recipeWow!! he has got a friend

Method

Heat oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add urad dal, hing and curry leaves. Once dal changes to golden brown, add onions, green chillies and saute until it turns transparent.(Add 3 chillies if you are not using sambar powder).

Add tomatoes and cook for a few minutes. Add vegetables (mix of carrot, potato, chow chow/chayote) at this stage if you are using it.

Add dal (moong dal/ pasi paruppu), salt needed, turmeric powder, sambar powder, 1 cup of water and pressure cook for 3 whistles or until dal turns soft.

Open the cooker once the pressure goes down. Mash the contents slightly and then boil on medium flame 2-3 minutes.

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with idli or dosa or pongal.

This sambar should be watery, so adjust the consistency by adding more or less of water.

Moong dal sambar makes a refreshing change from the regualr toor dal sambar. I usually make with moong dal if I run out of toor dal. And the Ujala bathed lady bird looks oh so cute!! Am sure you would have no trouble at all feeding your kids, the way you present food!!
