Red Rice Dosa-Sivappu Arisi Dosai-Healthy Breakfast Recipes

April 11, 2015 by PadhuSankar 18 Comments

According to Wikipedia – Red rice is a special variety of rice that is red in color. It derives its rich red colour from an antioxidant called anthocyanins. This antioxidant is beneficial to reduce symptoms of inflammation, cancer prevention and weight loss management. Red rice is generally unhulled or partially hulled rice which has a red husk, rather than the much more common brown. Red rice has a nutty flavor, and a high nutritional value, as the germ of the rice is left intact. It is packed with nutrients such as B-vitamins, iron, calcium and zinc. I love making dosas and idlis with different grains. Instead of making dosas always with white rice, make healthy choice like brown rice, red rice, millets etc. Today we will learn how to make healthy Red Rice dosa following this easy recipe.

Red Rice Dosa-Sivappu Arisi Dosai

Red Rice Dosa

Prep Time : 45 mins (excluding soaking time)

Cook Time : Less than 5 mins per dosa
 Serves:10 Dosas
 Recipe Category: Breakfast-Dinner-Dosa Varieties
 Recipe Cuisine: South Indian
 Author:Padhu Sankar

   Ingredients needed

   Red Rice/Sivappu Arisi -2 cups
Whole Urad dal (without skin) -1/2 cup
   Salt as needed
Oil for making dosas (preferable sesame seed oil)

Preparation

Wash and soak rice and urad dal separately for 4-5 hours.

Grind dal for 20 minutes or until light and fluffy, sprinkling water from time to time.

Grind rice to a smooth paste adding water from time to time.

Mix both ground dal and rice together adding salt needed. Leave it to ferment overnight. If you are new to making dosas, check out my detailed post on how to make dosa and how to grind idli and dosa batter.

Method

Heat a tawa, when it is hot, pour a ladle of batter in the center of the tawa. Spread it in a circular motion.

Drizzle a tsp of oil around the dosa. When the corners start lifting up, flip it over to the other side. Drizzle another half tsp of oil and cook until done.

Once cooked, remove the dosa from the tawa and serve hot with any chutney or sambar of your choice.

You have to add urad dal only for this dosa as it gives softness to the dosa. If you have moong dal, you can make moong dal dosa or pesarattu with whole moong beans

Try using it. Reduce the quantity by half and try it. It should come. 1 cup flour and 1/4 cup urad dal soaked and ground.

I had the tastiest red rice curd rice in Bangalore recently but can't find a recipe easily. Is it the same as usual curd rice, where I just substitute white rice with red rice?
    Thanks
