Tomato Thokku-Thakkali Thokku

November 29, 2011 by PadhuSankar 32 Comments

Tomato Thokku is so versatile that it goes well as a side dish for idly, dosa, adai, upma, chapati, all parathas, curd rice, samosas, vada, as a spread for sandwich, can be mixed with plain hot rice etc. It is so easy to make, taste delicious and can be stored in the refrigerator for nearly 10-15 days. I make this often. We all love it so much, that it will vanish in just 2 days. Today let us learn how to make tomato thokku following this easy tomato thokku recipe-

Tomato thokkuHow to prepare Tomato thokku

Tomato – 1/2 kg
Ginger-garlic paste – 1 tsp (optional)
Oil – 3 tbsp
Hing – a generous pinch
Chilli powder – 2 tsp
Turmeric powder – a pinch
Salt as required

Preparation

Bring water to boil. Put the tomatoes in boiling water, switch off the flame and keep it closed for 10 minutes.

Remove the skin. After it cools, put it in a blender and puree it.

Method

Heat oil in a kadai , add mustard seeds and hing. When mustard splutters, add tomato puree, ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, chilli powder and salt required.

Cook covered in medium flame, stirring in between, till the mixture oozes out oil.

Store it in a bottle or container and refrigerate it. Always use dry spoon to take the thokku.

Note

If preferred, you can add 1/4 tsp of roasted fenugreek powder in the end and mix it.

Use ripe and juicy tomatoes for preparing this thokku.

You will love my Sun dried tomato pickle also.

Meet you all again with another interesting recipe, till then it is bye from Padhu of padhuskitchen.com

Add to uses : Use it like pesto for breads, pasta, use it for soups and kootu to add flavour. It is so versatile.

I have written ginger garlic paste is optional in ingredients list – so not necessary. You can prepare this thokku without g-g paste also.

The Tomato thokku came out a bit watery. But I added some rice flour dissolved in water. It finally cane out with the thick consistency. It tasted good.Last week I made kathirikkai sadam, bindi masala and beans paruppu usili. All came out nicely. Thank you.
