Aval Upma-Poha Upma Recipe-Aval Recipes

June 23, 2012 by PadhuSankar 37 Comments

Aval Upma is a quick fix breakfast recipe which you can prepare in a jiffy with minimum and easily available ingredients. I find many mothers resorting to 2 minutes instant food for breakfast due to lack of time. This aval recipe can also be prepared in just a few minutes time and is very healthy, delicious and filling. Great for working folks, bachelors and busy women. Today we will learn how to make Aval/poha upma (South Indian Style) following this easy recipe.

Aval Upma-Poha upma

Aval Upma-Poha Upma

Aval Upma-Poha upma

 Prep Time : 5 mins

 Cook Time : 10 mins
 Serves: 1
 Recipe Category: Breakfast
 Recipe Cuisine: South Indian
 Author:Padhu Sankar

   Ingredients needed

   Aval/Poha (flattened rice)- 1 cup
   Onion – 1
   Green chilli -1 finely chopped
Ginger – 1/2 tsp finely chopped
   Turmeric powder – a pinch
   Roasted peanuts – 2 tbsp
   Lemon juice – 1/2 tsp

  For the seasoning

   Oil -1 tbsp
   Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
   Cumin seeds/jeera – 3/4 tsp
   Hing – pinch
   Red chilli -1
   Curry leaves – a sprig

   For garnishing

Grated coconut – 1 tbsp (optional)
Finely chopped coriander leaves -1 tbsp

Preparation

Wash poha 2 times and drain it in a colander. Let it sit for 10 minutes.

Dry roast peanuts and keep it aside. Skip this step if you are using roasted peanuts.

Method

Heat a tbsp of oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add cumin seeds, hing, red chilli and curry leaves.

Then add finely chopped onions, ginger, green chillies, turmeric powder and salt. (you can add salt required for the aval also now)

Saute until onions turn pink.

Then add poha/aval, roasted peanuts and mix well. Cook for 2-3 seconds and remove from flame.

Squeeze a few drops of lemon juice and mix well.

Garnish with coriander leaves and grated coconut.

Note – If you are using thick red aval, rinse the aval 2-3 times, drain the water completely and then sprinkle little water. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes, so that it will become soft. You can use any kind of aval but make sure it is soft before adding to the upma.

This is like south indian poha… my husband is not a fan of the regular poha but this south indian touch is something that might get him to like one of my favourite breakfasts.

When using thick red aval, you have to rinse the aval well, drain the water, sprinkle little water and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. It will become soft by that time. Then follow the rest of the procedure for the upma as given above.

Perhaps you washed for too long or soaked it too long. Also you should drain the water well.

You just have to rinse it twice, drain the water and let it stand for 10 minutes. You should not soak it.
