Ragi Sweet Porridge-Ragi Malt-Finger Millet Sweet Porridge-Kezhvaragu Kanji

December 1, 2013 by PadhuSankar 12 Comments

Ragi or finger millet is rich in calcium and antioxidants and are gluten-free. So I make it a point to include it in my diet often. My morning drink is always porridge, but not the same porridge everyday. If it is oats porridge one day, it is multi grain porridge or ragi porridge the next day. I also alternate between sweet porridge and savory porridge. So I never find porridge boring. That is the reason you find many porridge recipes in this space. Drinking porridge after my 5 km walk in the morning keeps me active and energetic. I want to share it with you all as I want everybody to enjoy its health benefits and lead a happy and healthy life. This ragi porridge is one of my favorites and it is also very delicious as it is loaded with nuts and dates. If you don’t have time for breakfast, you can make this filling and healthy porridge which hardly takes 10 minutes, but never skip breakfast.Today we will learn how to make ragi sweet porridge (Kelvaragu kanji) following our easy recipe.

Ragi Malt-Ragi Sweet Porridge
Finger Millet Porridge -walnuts-palm candy-almonds-chopped dates

How to make Finger Millet Sweet Porridge

Cook time – under 10 mins
Serves -1

Ingredients needed

Finger millet flour/ragi flour – 1/4 cup
Milk – 3/4 -1 cup (boiled)
Palm jaggery or palm jaggery crystals or jaggery – 1 tbsp
Dates -3-4
Walnuts -2 tbsp
Almonds (blanched) – 4

Preparation

Soak almonds in hot water for 10 minutes.Remove the skin and chop it.

Chop dates and walnuts into bite sized pieces.

Mix ragi flour with 1/4 cup water without any lumps. Then add 1 more cup of water and mix well.

Method

Cook ragi on medium flame stirring continuously.

When it starts thickening, add a cup of milk, palm jaggery and bring it to boil stirring it continuously.

Switch off, add walnuts, dates, almonds and drink warm.

I assure you that you will love this porridge and make it a part of your diet. Even those who are not fond of porridge will love this finger millet porridge with nuts and dry fruits.

Note – You can prepare ragi flour at home as I have done for my multigrain porridge or you can get it ready made. I got ragi flour ready made this time from organic store.

Hi, Can I make this recipe in the morning and have it during evening time? or it's necessary to drink it as warm?

You can make it in the morning and refrigerate it. Warm it before drinking it in the evening. Discard leftovers if any.

How is the porridge supposed to taste? While my consistency was correct, it tasted rather raw and uncooked- could taste the powder. Pls advise
