Lentil Soup Recipe-Dal Soup-Masoor Dal Tomato Soup-How to make Dal Soup

November 28, 2013 by PadhuSankar 14 Comments

Lentil soup is a wholesome comforting soup and is very simple to prepare. You can use masoor dal or moong dal or a mix of both to prepare this soup. I have added tomatoes to make it more delicious. A bowl of hot lentil soup with whole wheat brown bread  makes a filling meal. It is perfect for dinner this season.

Dal soup-Lentil soup

How to make Lentil Soup

Prep time – under 10 mins
Cook time – under 15 mins
Serves -2

Ingredients needed

Onion chopped -1/2 cup
Garlic – 3 cloves
Tomatoes – 3/4 cup chopped
Dal/lentils -1/4 cup (you can use masoor dal or moong dal or a mix the both the dals as I have done)
Chilli powder -1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Pepper powder to taste
Oil – 2-3 tsp

Preparation

Chop onion, tomatoes, garlic and keep it ready.

Soak dal for 15 minutes in hot water.(You can reduce the cooking time and fuel by soaking dal)

Method

Heat oil in a pressure pan, add chopped onions, garlic and saute until onions turn transparent.

Add chopped tomatoes and saute for a few more minutes.

preparing soup

Add chilli powder, salt needed, soaked dal and 2 cups of water. Pressure cook for 1 whistle. If you had not soaked the dal, pressure cook for 2 whistles.

Moong dal soup

After the pressure subsides, open the cooker and let it cool. Blend the cooked mixture to a smooth puree.

Strain it using a strainer.

How to make dal soup

Add 1/2 cup of water and reheat the mixture. Let the mixture come to a boil, then simmer for 5-6 minutes and remove from heat.

Add pepper powder to taste and serve it hot with whole wheat bread.

Note – You can give this dal soup to babies above 1 year but avoid using chilli powder and pepper powder. First start with very less quantity, then you can increase gradually. For more details and more soup recipes for toddlers (babies) refer Soup Recipes for Babies
If you do not have a pressure pan or pressure cooker, you can do the same recipe in a pan with lid but will take a longer time.

Why strainer is used is not clear in the preparation process, otherwise all other steps are fine in the preparation of Lentil soup.
