Idiyappam is not only tasty but also takes very less time to prepare. It is a very healthy breakfast as it is steam cooked and is also easily digestible. I have already made a detailed post on how to make idiyappam (plain ones) and coconut idiyappam. If you have not checked it out, do refer it .Today we will learn how to make a very simple lemon idiyappam or lemon sevai following this easy recipe.

   Ingredients needed

Idiyappam (prepared from 1/2 cup of rice flour)
Juice of 1 lemon or as needed
   Salt as required

   For the seasoning

   Oil – 3 tsp
   Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
   Red Chilli – 1
   Green Chilli – 1
   Hing/asafoetida – a generous pinch
   Bengal gram/chana dal/kadalai paruppu – 1 tsp
   Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
   Curry leaves – a sprig

Roasted Cashew nuts or Roasted peanuts – 2 tbsp

Preparation

Prepare idiyappam as mentioned in the Idiyappam Recipe. After it cools, loosen the strings and keep it ready.

Method

In a broad vessel, add lemon juice and salt. Keep it aside.

Heat a tsp of oil in a pan, fry cashew nuts until golden brown. Remove and keep it aside.

In the same pan, add the remaining oil and heat it. Add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add hing, red chillies, bengal gram, turmeric powder, curry leaves and green chillies.

Saute on low heat until dal turns golden brown.

Add the seasoning to the lemon juice mix. Add fried cashew nuts or roasted peanuts.

Add plain idiyappam to the above and mix well. Adjust salt and lemon juice according to your taste.

Serve it with chips or papads or appalam.

Shruthi- It means you are adding too much water while preparing idiyappam, that is the reason it is sticking to each other. Try reducing the quantity of water next time while preparing idiyappam
