My whole family loves one pot meals and this is one of our favorite dish. Today we will learn how to make Arisi Paruppu Sadam (Kovai Style) following this easy recipe with step wise pictures.

 Recipe Cuisine: South Indian

   Ingredients needed

   Rice -1/2 cup
   Tur dal- 2 tbsp
   Onion -1
   Green chilli -2 slit
   Garlic -4 cloves finely chopped
   Tomato -1
   Turmeric powder -a pinch
   Sambar powder -1 tsp
   Salt needed

   For seasoning

   Oil -3 tsp
   Mustard seeds -1 tsp
   Cumin seeds/jeera – 1 tsp
   Hing – a pinch
   Curry leaves – few

   For Garnishing

   Ghee – 1/2 tsp
   Coriander leaves -2 tbsp

Preparation

Wash and soak rice and dal for 20 minutes. Drain the water and keep it aside. I used just regular rice.(not basmati rice)

Chop onions lengthwise, slit green chillies and finely chop tomatoes.

Method

Heat oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add cumin seeds, hing and curry leaves.

preparation for dal rice

When jeera/cumin seeds sizzle, add onion, garlic and green chilli.

Saute until onions turn transparent. Then add tomatoes, turmeric powder and sambar powder.

sauteing onions and tomatoes

Add rice and dal, 1 1/2 cup of water and needed salt.

Taste the water to check if the salt added is perfect. If it is slightly salty, it will be perfect once the rice is cooked.

Pressure cook rice for 3 whistles, once the pressure subsides, open the cooker, mix the contents, add a tsp of ghee and garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves (Rice should not be mushy).

Serve hot with chips or potato curry or even tomato chutney or appalam.

Note – Regarding cooking rice, you can pressure cook directly in the cooker or keep it in a vessel inside the cooker as I have done. For more details check out How to cook rice.

Of course, you can make it with brown rice also. Soak it for sometime as brown rice does not get cooked easily.
