Tawa Pulao-Mumbai Street Food Recipe Tava Pulao

Tawa pulao is a popular Mumbai street food. It is called tawa pulao as it is prepared on same tawa in which they make pav bhaji. Pav bhaji masala is used to prepare this pulao. It can be prepared with left over rice also. It is very easy to prepare and tastes delicious. It is perfect for lunch box also. Today we will learn how to make tawa pulao following this easy recipe.
Tawa Pulao

How to prepare Tawa Pulao 

Prep time – under 15 mins
Cook time – under 15 mins
Serves -2

Ingredients needed 

Basmati Rice – 1 cup

Onion finely chopped – 1 cup heaped
Ginger garlic paste – 1 tsp
Tomato – 3/4 cup chopped
Capsicum – 1/2 cup chopped
Boiled Peas – 1/3 cup
Boiled potatoes – 1/3 cup or 1 medium sized potato
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Red Chilli paste – 1 1/2 tbsp or as needed
Pav Bhaji masala – 2-3 tsp (available ready made)
Salt as needed

For the seasoning 

Oil – 1 tbsp
Butter – 1 tbsp
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp

For garnishing 

Finely chopped coriander leaves

Preparation

Boil peas with little salt and keep it aside.

Boil potato, peel the skin and cut it into cubes and keep it ready.

Soak 8-10 red chillies in hot water for 1 hours after removing the seeds. Grind it to a smooth paste. Our red chilli paste is ready.
Cook basmati rice with 2 cups of water and keep it ready. It should be cooked in such a way that each grains are separate. Let it cool. Check out my detailed post on how to cook basmati rice 

Method

Heat oil + butter in a kadai, add cumin seeds, when it splutters, add finely chopped onions and saute until onions turn light brown.

Add ginger garlic paste and saute for a few more minutes or until the raw flavor goes.

Add finely chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder and saute until tomatoes become soft and well cooked.

Add chopped capsicum, sprinkle water and cook for 3-4 minutes. Add boiled potatoes, boiled peas and mix it well.

Add chilli paste, pav bhaji masala, salt needed, 2 tbsp of water and cook for a few more minutes. 

How to make tawa pulao

Fluff rice with a fork, add it to the prepared masala and mix well until the rice is well coated with the masala. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until everything gets blended well.

Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with raita or papads or salad.
