Cooking tips for Working Women

1.Planning is very important. Plan what you are going to prepare for the next 4 or 5 days and keep everything ready. It makes the whole process much easier.
2.Grind for idli batter every Sunday. You can make idli, dosa, uthappam and paniyaram with that batter.Add ragi flour to the dosa batter and prepare healthy ragi dosa one day. You can add chopped vegetables to the dosa batter and make vegetable uthappam.

3.Keep brown bread and a few chutneys like tomato chutney, green chutney etc with you, which will serve as a side dish for idly, dosa, pongal and can also be used as a spread for sandwiches and bread toast.

4.If you run out of time or get up late in the morning, instant oats will come handy.Oats with banana is not only filling but takes just 10 minutes to prepare and is also very healthy.

5.You can prepare stuffing for parathas on Sundays and keep it in an air tight container. It will stay fresh for 2-3 days. You can make stuffed parathas for dinner after you return from the office. You can have curd or any chutney as side dish.

6.Poha (aval) is very easy to cook and you can make delicious and healthy breakfast in less time using poha. Pressure cook potatoes the day before and put it in the fridge, the next day you can make aloo poha in just 10 minutes. It takes only 10 minutes to prepare Aval Upma. So keep poha/aval in stock at home. You can mix poha with beans carrot curry or potato capsicum curry and prepare breakfast in just 5 minutes. You can use leftover sabjis also. I used to prepare excess sabji/curry just for the sake of preparing some quick tiffin or breakfast with poha.

7.One pot meals are so easy to prepare and is also healthy. You can prepare one pot meals on week days and keep elaborate meals for the week ends.

8.Vathal kuzhambu, milagu kuzhambu, karuveppilai kuzhambu, puli kachal can all be stored in the refrigerator for a week.

9.You can invest in a food processor as it is very easy to shred and grate vegetables using that.

10. Grate coconut, keep it in an air tight container and put it in the freezer. Take it out 10 minutes before use. You can take required quantity and put it back into the freezer. It will be useful for you to prepare kootu or arachu vitta sambar or  just to add to poriyals. It saves you a lot of time.

11. Always have some podi at home. If you find time, you can prepare it at home or you can get it ready made from the shops.

12.Now-a-days, you get everything ready made, so do not be particular to prepare everything from scratch. You can buy certain things ready made and reduce your work load.

13.Most Punjabi gravies are onion tomato based. You can prepare onion tomato gravy and freeze it in an air tight container. When required you can take needed quantity and heat it. You can add cooked rajma or channa or even paneer to it and make a quick side dish for chapati. You can even mix rice with it and make a quick tomato rice.

Thanks wonderful tips. I have a short cut for kootu and moorkulambu arachuvitta sambar. Keep coconut milk powder handy. One tsp dissolved in little water can be used as ubstitute for ground coconut. And the taste is much better than ground coconut.

Fantastic blog! I’m impressed, I must say. Really rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both informative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. Your blog is outstanding; the issue is something that not a lot of people are talking intelligently about it. I’m really happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this.

Hi Padhu… I have been following your recipes for quite some time now and have to say that I love them!!! Particularly, those simple recipes which are easy to make at home. I would like to share a tip with the readers. After I grate the coconut, I usually store it in 5-6 small containers ( say 1 coconut) as it is said that it is not good to put it back in freezer once you thaw the coconut. Hope this tip is useful to others.

Thank you so much Srivani. Glad you love my recipes. Regarding your query – why don't you try vaya tyffyn. It keeps food hot if you do not open in between. But I felt it was a little small but for school kids, it might be perfect. Check my review on vaya tyffyn. Use the search box to search "Vaya tyffyn review padhuskitchen".
